Freedom of Religion
“Although it is the duty of all men frequently to assemble together for the public worship of Almighty God; and piety and morality, on which the prosperity of communities depends, are hereby promoted; yet no man shall or ought to be compelled to attend any religious worship, to contribute to the erection or support of any place of worship, or to the maintenance of any ministry, against his own free will and consent; and no power shall or ought to be vested in or assumed by any magistrate that shall in any case interfere with, or in any manner control the rights of conscience, in the free exercise of religious worship, nor a preference given by law to any religious societies, denominations, or ”
Guys and gals, let us step away from the U.S. Constitution for a moment. So many have tried to parse the word “Congress” and say that the founders ment only the federal congress, and did not consider local bodies as a “congress”. I personally don’t hold to that line of thought.
The piece at the top of this comment however is section 1, of Article 1, of the Delaware Constitution.
It says, ” yet no man shall or ought to be compelled to attend any religious worship, to contribute to the erection or support of any place of worship”
Well I think that we can all agree that a prayer is a form of worship, correct. We can also agree that the building where the Sussex County Council meetings are held are paid for by all tax payers and not just Christians. And since if you want to attend the only county council meeting that there is, then you are forced to attend a religious worship, in a building that many did not give their permission to be built with their tax dollars, to be used for worship.
So will we now be told that we need not respect the state constitution? Will we now be told that it is still okay to alienate tax paying citizens because the religion of the day is Christianity? I have too much respect for Christianity and the principles upon which we were founded upon to allow either one to be corrupted by the sinful hand of man and I not speak out .
