Extortion ?

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Ca.) has sent out letters to the largest Insurance companies around the nation requesting their accounting books be sent to his committee. Rep. Waxman has stated that this is so the committee can examine the amount of money being paid out to top executives in wages and bonuses. The committee also will look into how money is being spent for outside activities such as trips and conferences.

Well we have seen all of this before haven’t we ? We saw it with the lending industry after they took TARP money, we saw it when the auto industry came begging to the Federal Government for bail out funds. And remember that the Federal Government gave itself the power to take over any industry it feels is in danger of failing , if the failing would endanger the national economy.

But now we are seeing this tactic being used as a leverage tool. The insurance industry is a huge part of the opposition to the President’s health care take over , so it would seem that Rep. Waxman is using this threat of an audit to bring them in line.

The insurers are basically being told that either they get on board with the President or they will be tried in the court of public opinion. The insurers will be painted as greedy millionaires the same as were the auto executives for flying to Washington to beg for money, the same as banking executive were for taking trips that had been scheduled for months in advance of TARP being passed.

This is nothing short of extortion and blackmail. Is this the type of behavior that we expect from our leaders? Will this type of governing move our nation forward? We often hear about Joe McCarthy and his so called witch hunts for communist. Is this attack on a private industry any less a witch hunt ?

Rep. Waxman’s attempt at scare tactics , I believe is another indication that the President and his minion  are in trouble on their push for health care takeover and should give those of us who are against it more reason to fight back to repel this socialist president’s push to socialize every aspect of our nation and our lives.

I am wondering what gives them the authority to do this? It seems to be meddling in the affairs of a private company. I might be naive on this, but it is rather scary to me. What’s next?

Shirley, you have a right to be frightened. While congress does have the power to subpoena these records when they have due cause, in this case it is merely a fishing expedition and worse , it is an attempt to cow this private industry into backing a plan that they believe to be detrimental to their industry. It is clearly an abuse of power.
This president and this congress have shown nothing short of a total disregard for the rights of the people of this nation but also a disregard for the very foundation of this nation and that is our rules of law.

My guess is there’s some kind of loophole where congress can subpoena these records.

I’d hazard a guess that, for instance, Medicare Advantage is paid for by Medicare, hence gubmint funds. MA is a program that in certain cases pays private insurers to act as a proxy of sort for Medicare.

So there’s probably some little used provision somewhere in the fine print that the gubmint can examine their records. Or maybe these health insuyrers get gubmint money of some kind and same thing.

Point it I think this action was cleared through the legal beagles as legit.

Which brings it back to Frank’s argument that it is blackmail.

    Which I agree.

Probably they’re going to find how much the CEO’s make, maybe trips the company employees made…anything to demonize them.

Then the fine, fine Waxman, who should be charged Cap and Trade debits for the air he pulls in through that nose of his, can make a big show about health insurers, the money their dastardly CEO’s make.

Lookit, this is not going to work. Even if they cleared an auditorium somewhere so that Waxman didn’t kill people by breathing up all the air and he did some grand announcement about health insurance CEO’s….as in…BLUE CROSS CEO MAKES MILLIONS IN BONUS’ ow some such…it’s not going to work.

Americans ain’t buying this health care act, period.

We don’t care how much Joe Blow president of BC makes, we don’t care about Waxman and his theatrics, we don’t care if every health insurance company in American took over all of the Hawaiian islands for a whole month and partied every night till dawn.

We care about the gubmint controlling health care and they’re never going to change that. We don’t want them, even in the most benign of ways, offering to pay for “end of life” counseling. We don’t want them obtaining savings from Medicare which is in trouble enough and we know it means Medicare recipients get rationed medical care. We don’t want the gubmint involved and administering health care, dear Lord it’s enough we got to deal with them with our cars at the local MVA.

Which is not to say they won’t do it. The Dems always got a trick up their sleeve. They’ll try. But if they succeed it will be by trickery of some sort because Waxman be damned, Americans do NOT want gubmint health care.

Like Lincoln said….you can fool SOME of the people ALL of the time. You can fool ALL of the people SOME of the time. You cain’t fool ALL of the people ALL of the time and this is one of those times.
